Docklands Chamber of Commerce History
From mid-2002, as Docklands' development began to take shape, inner Melbourne witnessed the emergence of a new business district. Initially home to a large number of businesses in the hospitality field, the precinct has continued to grow to spawn a diverse and vibrant business community. In May 2003, with support from the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI), a group of local proprietors resolved to create a forum to support businesses in Docklands and promote the area as a business destination.
And so the Docklands Chamber of Commerce was born. Guided in its early days by a group of local business folk, the Chamber continued to gain momentum and membership grew with incorporation in 2004, followed by the first annual general meeting and election of the first committee. By this time, more than 60 businesses at Docklands ranging from major corporations to sole-trader operations had joined, but by the end of 2004, the number had swelled to 90. Today, membership continues to grow.
Broad membership
The chamber's members range from individual business people, many of them restaurateurs, to managers and employees of large corporations such as the Australian Football League, National Australia Bank, Medibank Private and Spencer Street Station.
Through meeting every month, the chamber aims to represent and promote business operators within Docklands and provide a forum for discussing issues and networking. Another of its priorities is communicating with the government on local business matters such as car parking, street access, public transport, signage, local park development and the use of public space.
